The pharaoh Pesmatik I ,26th Dynasty , 644 BC could not reunify Egypt without the use of foreign mercenaries mostly brought from Greece as Egyptian regular army deteriorated due to invasions and invaders' policy. Pesmatik had to use 30,000 Greek mercenaries in addition to the remains of the Egyptian indigenous army in order to expel the Nubians and to hold control over the whole country. Egypt could not remain strong so it was invaded and re invaded by the Persians and the Greeks.The policy of Alexander the great and Ptolemaic kings was always to exempt the Egyptian from joining the army until the battle of Raphia in 217 BC and once Ptolemy IV had to recruit the Egyptians for the first time which enabled him to accomplish his victory over the Seleucides , Consequently , the Egyptian recalled the feeling of patriotism back which led to have episodes of revolts against the Greeks!.
